Lesson 5: The Book of Jasher "Abram in Canaan"

In Lesson 4, we read the exciting account of Abraham being thrown into the fiery furnace, just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did many years later. Our hero was supernaturally saved, and awarded great riches and servants, as well as gaining a following of 300 men. Abram said, "Do not bow down to me, but bow down to the God of the world who made you, and serve him, and go in his ways. For it is HE who delivered me from out of this fire, and it is he who created the souls and spirits of all men....he will deliver those who trust in him from all pain."

This is the key idea: " So Abram served the Lord all the days of his life, and he walked in his ways and followed his law. From that day forward, Abram inclined the hearts of the sons of men to serve the Lord." At this time, Abram takes Sarai to be his wife, the daughter of his brother Haran. Abram is now 50.

However, Nimrod, I am sure, was not pleased about all that transpired. Be sure to read the end of Chapter 12 to see what happens next! Nimrod has a dream that shakes him to the core! Again, the King is warned by his princes to kill Abram! This time, his servant Eliezer warns him of the danger and Abram once again takes refuge with Noah and Shem. Terah, too, flees with Abram, and the decision is made to go to the land of Caanan.

This is the place where the book of Jasher begins to intersect more with the account of the Bible.

  1. Read the end of Chapter 12 out loud, starting at 2000 am.

Questions:

  1. Why do you think Abram's father Terah decided to flee with him this time?

  2. Why was the dream so disturbing to the king?

  3. What other things about this story are interesting to you?

Take some time to skim the chapters 13 and 14 in the book of Jasher. If you have time,, read the bible Genesis 12:1-7. Also, read out loud the sections from Jasher 13:1-10, 17-28. (Chapter 14 pertains to Egypt and can be read later if you wish.)

Spend some time trying to reconcile these two accounts. Can they go together? How?

Now, spend time watching the video, the first 30 minutes! Chuck Missler is my favorite teacher!
